Passover for 2012 begins noon April 2

Sometimes folks ask when noon begins… since we use clocks that are set to man made times zones. What about daylight saving time?

The solar noon is “local apparent noon”. It is the time the sun is highest in the sky wherever you happen to live (assuming you live between the arctic regions). That time will not necessarily be exactly 12 noon on a clock whether you are on your time zone time or daylight saving time. A time zone covers several hundred miles east to west with everyone’s clocks set the same in that entire zone, but “local apparent noon” is high noon as it progresses across the region. It is measured on a sundial at the north to south meridian line when the shadow is on that line.

I want to know when high noon is where I am, how can I tell? If you can’t see a shadow because the day is overcast then you cannot. If the sun is out and you have a sundial that would work. Don’t have a sundial? You could jam two sticks in the ground north to south from each other, noon would be when the shadow is straight north to south.

Personally, I don’t worry too much about it because I can tell when it is in the afternoon even when it is overcast. I think most folks can. Ancient people did not have clocks and most did not have sundials either. They had brains.
