Group Headed By Weather Underground Terrorist Gets DOJ Grants

www.judicialwatch.org

May 08, 2012

The Justice Department has awarded a group headed by a domestic terrorist and one-time FBI fugitive with close ties to President Obama hundreds of thousands of dollars to reduce racial disparities in the juvenile justice system.

This is a story you likely won’t see in the mainstream media, but a conservative political magazine exposed it this week. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has given $400,000 in grants to an organization (W. Haywood Burns Institute) that blames disproportionately high criminal behavior among minority juvenile delinquents on discrimination. The San Francisco-based nonprofit describes itself as a leading organization in the field of juvenile justice and ethnic and racial disparities reduction.

Among the institute’s board of directors is Bernardine Dohrn, a longtime Obama supporter and fundraiser and proud member of the Weather Underground, a radical group that planted bombs on the Capitol, Pentagon and other government buildings to protest U.S. policy. Dohrn’s violent actions earned her a spot on the FBI’s most wanted fugitives list in the 1970s. She eventually served probation and spent some time in jail for refusing to cooperate with an investigation.

Dohrn is married to President Obama’s close friend and political mentor, William Ayers, the co-founder of the Weather Underground. Like his beloved wife, Ayers was also an FBI fugitive who has proudly admitted planting bombs on government buildings during the Vietnam era. In fact, he has publicly said that he doesn’t regret his terrorist acts and that in fact his group “didn’t do enough.”

The couple has long supported Obama’s political career by donating money to his campaigns and hosting fundraisers at their Chicago home. For years they all hung out in the same political and social circles, lived in the same Chicago neighborhood and Obama and Ayers served on the board of a leftwing Chicago nonprofit. However, during the 2008 presidential campaign Obama worked hard to distance himself from his terrorist pals.

Using the generous DOJ grant as a guide, it appears that Dohrn is still benefitting from the relationship. How else could one explain the DOJ grant? As the article that broke the story points out, Dohrn has a history with the Justice Department and it isn’t good. Why would the agency responsible for enforcing the law and defending the country against the attacks she once carried out give her taxpayer dollars? Americans will have to guess because the feds and Dohrn refused to comment for the story.

Gay marriage: Clooney fundraiser a hint of coming Obama money boom

news.yahoo.com (from Christian Science Monitor)

By Gail Russell Chaddock | Christian Science Monitor – 11 May 2012

WASHINGTON

President Obama’s decision to go public in support of same-sex marriage marked a historic moment for the presidency and the nation’s gay and lesbian community – and also set off a torrent of fundraising appeals that could change the fundraising math for this fall’s presidential race.

“Obviously yesterday we made some news,” President Obama told $40,000-a-plate guests at a fundraiser at the home of George Clooney in Studio City, Calif., on Thursday. The event raised nearly $15 million, expected to be a record.

Mr. Obama’s statement supporting marriage equality for all couples fulfills a longstanding demand of a critical group of donors – the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender community. On Monday, the president is scheduled to appear at a fundraiser in New York sponsored by gay and Latino supporters. On June 6, he heads back to Los Angeles for a LGBT gala, which organizers say quickly exceeded its 700-person limit after the president’s announcement.

Gay activists are prominent players in the Obama 2012 campaign, including finance director Rufus Gifford, Democratic National Committee treasurer Andrew Tobias, and White House social secretary Jeremy Bernard. In addition, the president has a designated outreach team to the LGBT community.

Some 1 in 6 of the president’s top campaign “bundlers” – that is, donors who solicit contributions from others and deliver them to candidates – publicly identify themselves as gay, according to a report this week by the Washington Post. The Center for Responsive politics last fall identified “at least 12 prominent gay and lesbian rights advocates, who together had bundled at least $2.7 million for the Obama campaign.”

Even before this week’s statement on gay marriage, the Obama administration claimed “historic strides” on behalf of the LGBT community. These include expanding federal civil rights legislation to include sexual orientation and gender identity, ending the 1993 “don’t ask, don’t tell” law prohibiting gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military, and directing hospitals receiving Medicare to allow visitation and medical-decision rights to LGBT patients and their partners.

Still, until this week, prominent gay activists had been openly at odds with the president over gay marriage as well as over his failure to issue a promised executive order to ban discrimination by federal contractors over sexual orientation or gender identity.

Moreover, this disappointment over failed promises was taking a toll on fundraising. Overall campaign contributions from gay and lesbian rights interest groups, directed mainly to Democrats, fell to a 16-year low in 2010 – and has dropped even further in the 2012 campaign cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

“Overall contributions from PACs or individuals affiliated with gay- and lesbian-rights interest groups totaled just $590,000 so far this cycle,” according to a CRP blog post on May 9. “Even if that figure doubles in the next nine months, it would fall short of the $1.3 million contributed in the 2010 cycle, and well below the $1.8 million raised in 2008.”

But after the president’s statement on marriage, prominent gay activists predicted that the White House could expect more energized support from the gay and lesbian community and its supporters.

At first glance, the president enjoys an overwhelming fundraising advantage against his presumptive GOP challenger Mitt Romney. According to the most recent reports, Obama has $104.1 million cash on hand versus $10.1 million for Mr. Romney. But in recent months, support from Wall Street donors has swung sharply to Romney, according to the Center for Responsive Politics – a shift that could prove significant if the race tightens in the fall.

(Unlike Romney, Obama did not face a tough primary, yet has already spent $89.8 million in his reelection bid, compared with $76.5 million in spending for Romney through March 31, the latest date for which figures are available.)

“The industry’s abandonment of Obama could hardly be more dramatic,” said the Center for Responsive Politics in a March 23 posting. “Wall Street’s preferred candidate in the 2008 race with more than $6 million in industry campaign contributions at this point in the cycle, [Obama] has received less than $2.6 million from the industry so far this time around.”

Los Angeles lawyer Dana Perlman, the cochair of Obama’s LGBT finance committee, told Reuters that he is already looking for a bigger venue for next month’s LGBT fundraiser, which had been planned for 700 people. “Everybody wants to do something,” he said.

“The president’s support of full marriage equality is something to be celebrated, and frankly, rewarded,” wrote lesbian activist and Moveon.org’s campaign director Julie Rosen, in a fundraising appeal e-mailed to some 7 million members on Thursday. “The best way to encourage the president to keep showing leadership and taking strong stands it to demonstrate how much his actions mean to you.”

“On a personal note, I can’t tell you how deeply meaningful President Obama’s statement was to me,” she added. “With my own big gay wedding only 24 days away, it’s incredibly uplifting to know that President Obama supports my right to marry the love of my life. That’s why for the first time since 2008, I pulled out my credit card and donated to his re-election. I hope you will join me.”

Gay activist and Facebook cofounder Chris Hughes, who organized Obama’s online outreach in the 2008 campaign, calls the president’s shift on gay marriage, “energizing.”

“This is one of those issues that now a majority of Americans see as a basic civil rights issue,” he said in an interview on CBS’s “This Morning” on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the White House as well as House and Senate campaign committees immediately sent out fundraising appeals to help defend the president from a backlash from conservatives on gay marriage. The president sent out a mass e-mail to supporters explaining his decision to “affirm my personal belief that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry,” and ending with a “please donate today.”

The Democratic National Committee revised the entry page on its website to feature this message: “Same-sex couples should be able to get married. Stand up with the president.” Then, this option: “I’m IN.”

Pressed on whether fundraising was a factor in the president’s turnabout on gay marriage, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California – an early advocate for gay and lesbian issues in Congress – said no. “The statement that the president made yesterday was something that was the right thing to do for our country, filled my heart with joy,” she told reporters at a briefing on Thursday. “But I really dismiss the idea that this has anything to do with money,” she added. “I really do.”

Environmental groups collecting millions from federal agencies they sue, studies show

www.foxnews.com

By Joshua Rhett Miller    Published May 08, 2012

Deep-pocketed environmental groups are collecting millions of dollars from the federal agencies they regularly sue under a little-known federal law, and the government is not even keeping track of the payouts, according to two new studies.

Under the Equal Access to Justice Act, or EAJA — which was signed into law by President Carter in 1980 to help the little guy stand up to federal agencies — litigants with modest means who successfully show government agencies wronged them can get their legal fees back from the taxpayer.

But the act also covers 501(c)(3) nonprofits, including environmental groups that aggressively sue the feds to enforce land-use laws, the Clean Water and Clean Air acts and laws protecting endangered species. Their lawyers are getting reimbursed at rates as high as $750 an hour, sources tell FoxNews.com.

“It was intended for helping our nation’s veterans, seniors and small business owners, but environmental groups have hijacked the so-called Equal Access to Justice Act and abused it to fund their own agenda,” Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., told FoxNews.com. “Then you have small businesses and the American taxpayers left to foot the bill.”

Environmental groups, however, argue that the act is an important tool in their efforts to protect the public’s interest in conservation, fighting pollution and ensuring the federal government follows its own rules.

“Litigation is not a moneymaker, and the litigation is being done to make a difference and make the world a better place,” Erik Molvar, executive director of the Wyoming-based Biodiversity Conservation Alliance, told FoxNews.com.

The exact taxpayer cost of the Equal Access to Justice Act remains unclear. The General Accounting Office, or GAO, tracked 525 legal fee reimbursements that totaled $44.4 million from 2001 through 2010, but found that only 10 of 75 agencies within the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Department of Interior could provide data on cases and attorney fee reimbursements.

“As a result, there was no way to readily determine who made claims, the total amount each department paid or awarded in attorney fees, who received the payments or statutes under which the cases were brought for the claims [for fiscal years 2000 through 2010],” the GAO report reads.

Barrasso fears that is only the tip of the iceberg.

“You’re talking about millions and millions of dollars,” Barrasso said. “There is a pressing need for more accountability and transparency. Even the government doesn’t know how much it’s paying out — it’s disturbing.”

“You’re talking about millions and millions of dollars … Even the government doesn’t know how much it’s paying out — it’s disturbing.”

– Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo.

A recent Notre Dame Journal of Legislation article said the law had a noble purpose once, but has produced an “incalculable waste of taxpayer money.”

“It is among the most wide-reaching statutes in the U.S. Code, and what it attempts to do is as complex in execution as it is simple in concept: to aid those who would otherwise be truly hurt by fighting the government when it acts without justification,” wrote Lowell Baier, author of the article and president of the Boone and Crockett Club, a Montana-based conservationist group. “But it is clear that EAJA is in need of reform.”

Critics say the act needs to be reformed in order to serve its original purpose. Baier calls for limiting it to small businesses and individuals and withholding or at least limiting payments where plaintiffs prevail on “process instead of substance.”

In May, Barrasso and Rep. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., jointly introduced the Government Litigation Savings Act to reform the Equal Access to Justice Act. If passed, the bill would cap reimbursements at $200 per hour. It would also limit repetitive lawsuits and require full accounting of payments authorized by the Equal Access law, the GAO report found.

“Obviously it’s a David and Goliath situation when a senior citizen, small business or veteran takes on the federal government,” Lummis told FoxNews.com. “When money is being spent trying to practice the equivalent of defensive medicine, the money is not going to the environment — it’s just going to lawyers. And that was never the intent of those dollars.”

But environmental groups say the law is working just fine, and proving the government’s position was not “substantially justified” — the standard for reimbursement — can be difficult. They say the reimbursements don’t come close to covering their expenses, much less provide incentive to bring frivolous cases.

Molvar, of the Biodiversity Conservation Alliance, told FoxNews.com that his organization, which has a $250,000 annual budget, received an average of $1,000 in Equal Access reimbursements in each of the past five years.

“And that was unusually high compared to previous years,” Molvar said. “We have spent far more litigating than we have gotten back.”

Molvar said it’s important to remember that his organization — which he characterized as one of the more litigious conservation groups in the country — only receives funds if it wins.

“You only get them when you win and prove that the federal government has broken the law,” he said.

Aggressive reforms could wind up preventing parties — environmental groups included — from challenging unjust decisions made by the federal government or enforcing laws that benefit the public, according to a July 2011 analysis of the bill by the Brennan Center for Justice

Kieran Suckling, executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity, said in statement issued in October that environmental groups collect only a small portion of overall fees under the Equal Access to Justice Act. He said his own group receives only a tiny fraction — less than 0.5 percent, on average — of its annual revenue of about $8 million from those attorney fees recovered.

“No one’s getting rich by making the government follow the law,” Suckling said in the written statement. He declined to be interviewed for this article. “Republicans are using this bill as a back-door attack on environmental laws they don’t like. The end result will be restricting citizen access to the court system and a federal government that’s less accountable to the people.”

The Grand Bay Hotel was attacked! Wait, never mind, it was just a military training exercise.

No, there was no smell of napalm in the morning.

But there was the thunderous whump whump of low-flying helicopters, and even the jarring blast of explosions at the abandoned Grand Bay Hotel in Coconut Grove early Tuesday during a military training exercise that jolted many unsuspecting residents from their beds.

“It was quite a shocking experience,” said Jane Muir, who was awakened around 1:45 a.m. by the sound of military choppers that later dropped rappelling soldiers onto the Grand Bay’s rooftop. “It was kind of that bizarre feeling that you were surrounded by wind.”

From her third-floor balcony, Muir then watched the soldiers fire off flares and smoke bombs before searching floor by floor through the darkened hotel, their paths marked by flashlights and the pop-pop-pop of gunshots. “The show of force was so overwhelming,” she said.

The maneuvers were part of a “realistic urban training” exercise for about 100 military personnel, and organized by the U.S. Special Operations Command, said Maj. Michael Burns, a U.S. Army spokesman. The exercise also included three military helicopters, and the use of simulated explosions and gunfire to mimic real-life military scenarios.

“They have to train in a realistic environment,” Burns said. “We didn’t use any real bullets,” he added reassuringly.

Miami police assisted in overseeing the exercises — but they were instructed to keep quiet about the exercises until late Monday, for security reasons. The police also blocked off roads around the Grand Bay during the exercise, Muir said.

“It was the federal government’s call on what was being done. We were courteously advised,” said Miami commissioner Marc Sarnoff, whose district includes Coconut Grove.

Miami Police Maj. Delrish Moss said that a news release about the training was sent out around 5 p.m. Monday, but it went largely unnoticed.

The explosions, however, did not. A handful of alarmed Grove residents called the police and City Hall to ask about the armed choppers flying over their homes.

Muir, for one, would not have minded a heads up beforehand.

“I thought it was kind of rude, to tell you the truth,” she said. “One neighbor was swearing, he was so annoyed.”

But despite the neighborhood anxiety, the exercise went off safely and quickly, Burns said.

“It seems very high drama, but to us it’s kind of simple,” he said.

Miami Herald staff writer Charles Rabin contributed to this report.

Federal Inmate Keith Judd Receiving Sizable Percent of Vote in West Virginia Democratic Primary

abcnews.go.com

May 8, 2012 11:16pm

Barack Obama was not the only Democrat on the ballot on Tuesday in West Virginia’s Democratic Presidential Primary. Keith Judd — also known as Inmate No. 11593-051 at the Federal Correctional Institution in Texarkana, Texas — was running against him.

Judd, who is serving out a 17.5 year sentence for extortion, currently has received 40 percent of the vote, with 83 percent of precincts reporting, according to The Associated Press. Obama currently has received 60 percent of the vote.

Obama’s lack of popularity in West Virginia has been well-documented. The state’s governor Earl Ray Tomblin and it’s junior senator Joe Manchin, both Democrats, have kept their distance from the president.

A further potential embarrassment for the Democrats, as The Charleston Gazette reports, Judd only needs 15 percent of the vote — which, indeed, it looks like he has accomplished — in order to be entitled to have at least one delegate represent him at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. this summer.

Judd would not be the first Democratic challenger to Obama to qualify for delegate representation at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. In Oklahoma’s Democratic primary in March, Randall Terry, a Democratic candidate who founded the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue and has more than 50 arrests under his belt, received 18 percent of the vote in the primary, giving him one delegate.

It is unknown what type of effect Judd’s status as a federal prisoner might have on the delegate allocation and selection to the convention.

Associated Press – 9 May 2012

ELIZABETH, Pa. (AP) — Police say an 84-year-old western Pennsylvania man wounded a home invasion suspect with the gun he carried in the Korean War.

Elizabeth Township police say 25-year-old Raymond Hiles was captured not long after trying to break into Fred Ricciutti’s home early Tuesday morning.

Ricciutti tells WPXI-TV (http://bit.ly/JdVDJ1 ) he heard Hiles break a window and then confronted him, firing a single shot that grazed Hiles’ neck.

Investigators say Hiles was arrested a few blocks away, carrying a screwdriver and a stun gun. He’s being held on $100,000 bail on charges including criminal trespass and burglary.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for Hiles.

Authorities say they don’t expect to bring any charges against Ricciutti.

In a riveting interview on TruNews Radio, Wednesday, private investigator Doug Hagmann said high-level, reliable sources told him the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is preparing for “massive civil war” in America.

“Folks, we’re getting ready for one massive economic collapse,” Hagmann told TruNews host Rick Wiles. Sign-up for my 100% FREE Alerts

“We have problems . . . The federal government is preparing for civil uprising,” he added, “so every time you hear about troop movements, every time you hear about movements of military equipment, the militarization of the police, the buying of the ammunition, all of this is . . . they (DHS) are preparing for a massive uprising.”

Hagmann goes on to say that his sources tell him the concerns of the DHS stem from a collapse of the U.S. dollar and the hyperinflation a collapse in the value of the world’s primary reserve currency implies to a nation of 311 million Americans, who, for the significant portion of the population, is armed.

Uprisings in Greece is, indeed, a problem, but an uprising of armed Americans becomes a matter of serious national security, a point addressed in a recent report by the Pentagon and highlighted as a vulnerability and threat to the U.S. during war-game exercises at the Department of Defense last year, according to one of the DoD’s war-game participants, Jim Rickards, author of Currency Wars: The Making of the Next Global Crisis.

Through his sources, Hagmann confirmed Rickards’ ongoing thesis of a fear of a U.S. dollar collapse at the hands of the Chinese (U.S. treasury bond holders of approximately $1 trillion) and, possibly, the Russians (threatening to launch a gold-backed ruble as an attractive alternative to the U.S. dollar) in retaliation for aggressive U.S. foreign policy initiatives against China’s and Russia’s strategic allies Iran and Syria.

“The one source that we have I’ve known since 1979,” Hagmann continued.  “He started out as a patrol officer and currently he is now working for a federal agency under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security; he’s in a position to know what policies are being initiated, what policies are being planned at this point, and he’s telling us right now—look, what you’re seeing is just the tip of the iceberg.  We are preparing, we, meaning the government, we are preparing for a massive civil war in this country.”

“There’s no hyperbole here,” he added, echoing Trends Research Institute’s Founder Gerald Celente’s forecast of last year.  Celente expects a collapse of the U.S. dollar and riots in America some time this year.

Since Celente’s ‘Civil War’ prediction of last year, executive orders NDAA and National Defense Resources Preparedness were signed into law by President Obama, which are both politically damaging actions taken by a sitting president.

And most recently, requests made by the DHS for the procurement of 450 million rounds of hollow-point ammunition only fuels speculation of an upcoming tragic event expected on American soil.

These major events, as shocking to the American people as they are, have taken place during an election year.

Escalating preparatory activities by the executive branch and DHS throughout the last decade—from the Patriot Act, to countless executive orders drafted to suspend (or strip) American civil liberties  “are just the beginning” of the nightmare to come, Hagmann said.

He added, “It’s going to get so much worse toward the election, and I’m not even sure we’re going to have an election in this country.  It’s going to be that bad, and this, as well, is coming from my sources.  But one source in particular said, ‘look, you don’t understand how bad it is.’  This stuff is real; these people, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), they are ready to fight the American people.”

TruNews‘ Wiles asked Hagmann: who does the DHS expect to fight, in particular?  Another North versus South, the Yankees against the Confederates?  Hagmann stated the situation is far worse than a struggle between any two factions within the U.S.; it’s an anticipated nationwide emergency event centered on the nation’s currency.

“What they [DHS] are expecting, and again, this is according to my sources, what they’re expecting is the un-sustainability of the American dollar,” Hagmann said.  “And we know for a fact that we can no longer service our debt.  There’s going to be a period of hyperinflation . . . the dollar will be worthless . . . The economic collapse will be so severe, people won’t be ready for this.”
